The images of such Dutch naval heroes as Piet Hein, Michiel de Ruyter and Karel Doorman – men who essentially kept this tiny country safe for 400 years – get a tarnishing at this Shipping Museum exhibition. Through the displaying of battle paintings, the key to De Ruyter’s tomb, the remains of a gunboat and images of the death of a ordinary seaman, romantic notions are cast aside.
